Workshop Andersen

Language and Specialization : Projects in the Saar-Lux Region

The workshop "Language and Specialization", jointly organized by Katja Andersen and Markus Peschel (Saarland University) on 28 November 2019 in Saarbrücken, was attended by 33 people, including professors, postdocs, doctoral students from Saarland University, University of Luxembourg, Trier University, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt/Main and the University of Education of Upper Austria.

In the context of the increasing multilingualism of children, the workshop examined implications in educational contexts and showed that there is a need in the Saar-Lux region for language-sensitive processing of tasks in the subjects "Sachunterricht" and "éveil aux sciences". In her lecture, Ilonca Hardy (Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt/Main) presented central parameters of a sensitive handling of linguistic diversity in the natural science subjects of primary school. It became clear that good language-sensitive teaching tasks are needed in order to meet the challenges of a linguistically heterogeneous student body. The subsequent discussion round showed implications for research in the context of the Saar-Lux region and highlighted the relevance of language-sensitive tasks in the subjects "Sachunterricht" and "éveil aux sciences" against the background of the multilingual language landscape at primary schools in this region.
