New UniGR-CBS thematic issue release: Cross-Border Inequalities in the Greater Region
European integration has strengthened border regions, transforming them from peripheral areas into spaces of cooperation. However, the social and economic inequalities in these regions have not been widely studied from a cross-border perspective.
This special issue addresses this gap by focusing on the Greater Region, which comprises Luxembourg, Wallonia (BE), Grand Est (FR), Saarland, and Rhineland-Palatinate (DE). Despite close interconnections, significant disparities persist in terms of income, housing and access to public services.
This new thematic issue comprises nine multilingual contributions that explore how inequalities shape labour markets, mobility and social cohesion. They also reveal the limitations of statistical tools in capturing cross-border dynamics. Fourteen authors from the Greater Region and beyond highlight the complexities of cross-border integration, as illustrated by wage differentials, housing prices and cross-border labour mobility, for example. The Greater Region is used as a case study to shed light on cross-border inequalities and to further scholarly debates on social marginalisation beyond national contexts.
