In the introduction, the concepts of boundary and boundary demarcation are first discussed. The book then focuses on the boundaries between disciplines, subjects, specialized fields of knowledge as well as epistemic and knowledge cultures. The author concisely summarizes the debates, some of them emotionally charged, that deal with the change of these boundaries. The text then aims to present forms of working on boundaries “that are oriented towards a systematic exploration of boundaries” (p. 116).

In the second chapter the term boundary work is characterized. The concept of the trinity of the boundary is used to broaden the dualistic thinking of the border: “The one, the other, and the creation, form the web of relationships that is to be used in boundary work” (p. 118). In particular, the book builds on the further development of the boundary work concept by Peter Mollinga and Julie Klein. Mollinga (2010) explains the distinction between the three types of boundary work (the development of appropriate boundary concepts, the adaptation of boundary objects as instruments and methods and the creation of boundary situations). The third chapter offers an introduction to the different forms of integrative and cross-border research, as well as an explanation for the presentation of these two terms simultaneously. Various forms of interdisciplinary research and transdisciplinary research are being carried out. This is followed by a presentation of different methods of boundary work. In doing so, the methods concept is used “for procedures of various kinds, which are aimed both at establishing conditions for joint thinking and acting, as well as at methods meant to elaborate on a mutual understanding, theoretical integration and the coupling of disciplinary research” (p. 124). Examples of the following topics are used to illustrate this: to explore professional profiles and identities; on concept work and on boundary work with variables, indicators and thresholds.

In conclusion, the author emphasizes that current knowledge desiderata, contrary to widespread criticism, require integrative and cross-boundary research. In addition, it is again pointed out that a methodological and taxonomic repertoire exists, which allows a classification of this type of research to be done.
